Breathing Lessons

He himself gives everyone life and breath and all things. —Acts 17:25

In my spare time I teach private voice lessons. On Day 1, Lesson 1, we learn how to breathe. For the singer, proper breathing technique is the foundation for everything else. In my walk with the Lord, I’ve found the same to be true: when I fail to acknowledge the source of my breath—my Creator—all my acts of worship are in vain.

It’s instinctual to take a big breath before singing a loud passage, but it takes more breath support to sing softly. Isn’t the same true for believers? In crisis, we pray urgently and run to the Word for comfort. We take in big gulps of God to carry us through the “loud” of life. But what about the soft times, when life decrescendos to a hush? Those are the times when I try to do it on my own, and my song of pride falls flat.

We all need a cosmic voice lesson. In the loud times and the quiet, we must remember our utter dependence on the Giver of every breath, from cradle to grave.

Make it Personal

Do you rely on God more in the loud seasons than in the quiet ones? How could you lean on Him even when life feels calm?
