Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. —Colossians 3:23 ESV
At Revive Our Hearts, we have a motto we keep in mind as an undergirding principle:
I serve at the pleasure of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
This helps us remember who’s boss. We don’t work to please ourselves, our friends, or even our constituents and listeners. Our staff, our leadership, myself included—we serve only at the pleasure of Jesus. That means He can send me wherever He wants and tell me to do whatever He desires. He is my Master, and I am His willing servant. As you read the New Testament epistles, notice how many times the authors of these letters identify themselves in this manner. Paul called himself “a servant of Christ Jesus” (Rom. 1:1). Peter—“a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 1:1). This was the way they wanted to be known.
We’re not always inclined to see it this way, but the fact is that it is a great privilege, an honor, to be the bondservant of Christ. You might even say a pleasure.
