Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. —Galatians 3:13
Judas, Pilate, the bloodthirsty soldiers, a mocking crowd . . . these all played a role in the torture and execution of Jesus. They were active participants in history-making in the worst possible way.
Yet there was one more, the most active of them all: God the Father.
The words of Isaiah are startling on this point: “Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely” (53:10). The Father was not just active in the death of Christ, He was the instigator. Clearly, He didn’t take ghoulish delight in His Son’s agony, but He was “pleased.” Why? Because His will was being fulfilled. Because God loves the world, these brutal things had to be done. His Son had to become sin; He had to become a curse. And so God punished the sin in order to remove the curse. Jesus paid it all.
