Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who lives in us. —2 Timothy 1:14
Before Ezra led a group of exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem, he entrusted the gold, silver, and precious vessels donated for the temple to twelve priests, charging them to guard these treasures until they reached the temple.
Along the journey, these men experienced opposition and struggles. But they would look back and say, “We were strengthened by our God” (Ezra 8:31). When they finally delivered their precious goods, “everything was verified by number and weight, and the total weight was recorded” (v. 34).
We’re on a journey toward the heavenly Jerusalem. God has put into our hands precious treasures—the gospel of Christ, the gifts He’s given us, the lives of those we’re called to serve. Apart from His strength, we couldn’t make the journey. But He will deliver us from every enemy along the way.
Soon we’ll be at the heavenly temple before our great High Priest, and what joy it will be to present the treasures entrusted to us and say, “Lord, by Your grace it’s all accounted for.”
