Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” —Luke 23:46
In the moment of severest agony, Jesus proclaimed absolute trust in the Father. It’s an intimate scene, recorded for our exhortation, to watch the Son draw His final breath while yielding everything to the Father. Though the world, the flesh, and the devil had thrown everything they had at Christ, never once had He given in. Even now, with everything on the line—for Himself and for us—Christ glorified the Father by declaring His trust.
Jesus knew, and we can know, that our lives belong to no one but God. Now and forever, they rest in the Father’s safe, secure, and protective hands.
Accepting that pain is a part of life can be done with passivity, a hopeless sort of giving in. But bring trust into the mix and the story takes a glorious turn. Trust acknowledges not only the presence of God in our suffering but also His care. He will not forsake us. He will protect us. And when the time comes, He will receive us.
