I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also. —2 Timothy 1:5
Paul was Timothy’s spiritual father, and as such, he wrote to Timothy to instruct, guide, and encourage him in his walk with Christ. Paul was confident that his spiritual son could run the race faithfully, since Timothy had grown up in an environment where his faith was carefully nurtured and his character shaped by godly example.
His mother, Eunice, modeled a life of sincere godliness and actively shaped Timothy’s mind and heart through the study of the Scriptures. Although her husband was Greek and did not share her faith, this did not prevent her from lovingly and faithfully passing on her own convictions. Timothy’s fruitful ministry was the tangible outcome of the faithful instruction and godly influence of both his mother and grandmother.
The greatest legacy that parents and grandparents can leave their children is ultimately a spiritual one: a life of steadfast faith lived fully for the glory of God and guided daily by His Word.
