I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day. —2 Timothy 1:12
Not long ago, at a concert at my church, the leader of the widows’ ministry walked by and waved—and row after row of senior saints waved back. It struck me how many memories must wash over them when the worship team sings lyrics like “’tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His Word.” 1
To someone outside the church, that refrain may seem sentimental, even naïve. But sung from the hearts of these widows, it feels more like a battle hymn.
Their husbands may have served in the world’s battles, but these women have fought on their knees, wrestling with doubts and walking through dark valleys. Now, with bodies worn by time and empty beds where their husbands once slept, they sing with hard-earned conviction.
In a cynical world, their faith humbles me. The older I get, the more I’m drawn to women who show that love for Jesus grows sweeter with a lifetime of trusting Him.
