[Jesus] went out and made his way to a deserted place. —Luke 4:42
In order to cultivate intimacy, husbands and wives need to spend time alone with each other. Jesus understood the importance of getting away from the crowd to sustain an intimate relationship with His Father.
Luke 5:15 tells us that when news about Him spread, “large crowds would come together to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.” Jesus had compassion on the multitudes and gave of Himself sacrificially to minister to them. But He knew He couldn’t meet their needs if He didn’t draw upon His relationship with His Father. So, the next verse tells us that Jesus often “withdrew to deserted places and prayed” (v. 16).
As part of a community of faith, we need times to worship, pray, and seek the Lord in the company of God’s people. But we must also have times that are set apart to be alone with Him. There are dimensions to our relationship with God that cannot be nurtured and sustained in a crowd
