“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” —Matthew 6:10 ESV
We all know this prayer so well, many of us from memory. How often do we gloss over these words: “Your will be done”?
In them we hear the same words Christ prays on the night He was betrayed, in the tense air of Gethsemane. He prays as He taught, even commanded, us to pray.
When we pray in His words, “not my will, but Yours,” we pray for at least three things:
First, we pray to accept God’s will. Second, we ask to approve God’s will. Third, we pray to do God’s will on earth as in heaven.
Christ has not asked us to do anything that He Himself has not already done, or to pray as He has not already prayed. “Not my will, but Yours” is a prayer after Wisdom Himself that is sure to make life, to make peace, to stir up kingdom trouble, to discern heaven and earth.
This is a prayer to make one wise.
