I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions. —Daniel 9:3
Daniel was someone who knew how to pray according to God’s Word. When he read Jeremiah’s prophecy that said the Jewish nation would be in exile for seventy years, he began to pray that God would deliver His people from captivity. Knowing the outcome (that the captivity would last for seventy years) did not cause Daniel to sit back and wait for it to happen. Rather knowing the will of God motivated him to pray more fervently:
Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen
and act! My God, for your own sake,
do not delay. (Daniel 9:19)
Daniel prayed according to the Scriptures he had read. He prayed for God’s will—as it had already been revealed—to be done on earth. In his prayer, Daniel aligned himself with the heart, the plan, and the purposes of God. Through prayer, he became a partner with God in the fulfilling of those purposes.
