The Israelites ate manna for forty years. —Exodus 16:35
During the forty years Israel wandered in the wilderness, God provided for all their needs. He sent manna every day (except for the Sabbath). God gave exactly what was needed for everyone to have their needs met for that day.
This physical bread was a picture of the Bread of Life—the Word of God. God created both our bodies and souls to require daily sustenance. He reminded His people that “man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deut. 8:3).
Physical nourishment wasn’t sufficient—they needed spiritual nourishment as well. Just as they needed to gather and eat physical bread daily, so they needed to daily gather and partake of the Bread of Life to feed their souls.
When Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us each day our daily bread” (Luke 11:3), He wasn’t only teaching us to trust God to supply our daily physical needs, but He was also reminding us of the importance of seeking from Him the spiritual nourishment our souls need each day.
