He Is Faithful

“Is anything impossible for the LORD?” —Genesis 18:14

In Genesis 18, twenty-four years had passed since God promised to turn Abraham and Sarah’s childless family into a nation. Then God announced that in a year, Sarah would have a son (v. 10). I would expect Sarah to be filled with joy. Instead, she laughed. Her self-talk is revealing: “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I have delight?” (v. 12). Her hope of motherhood—and everything—was gone. Sarah saw herself as old and useless.

What does God do when the recipient of His promises acts like there are none? He gently confronted Sarah: “Is anything impossible for the LORD?” (v. 14).

If you feel hopeless, know two lies behind it: that you’ve been shut out from God’s promises and that God is unable. Both are false! If you doubt this, remember a ninety-year-old woman—after a lifetime of infertility—gave birth to a son she named “Laughter.”

One day, when your faith becomes sight, you’ll know just how faithful God has been to keep His promises. For now, He invites you to walk by faith.
