Marriage at the Cross

“I thought marriage was supposed to make me happy.”

“He doesn’t know the first thing about meeting my needs.”

Nancy Leigh DeMoss: If either mate wants to make a marriage work, they’ve got to get to the cross.

Philippians 2 tells us that even though Jesus was God, He didn’t cling to His rights as God. Instead, He made Himself of no reputation. He became a servant. He humbled Himself and He went to the cross—the ultimate picture of selfless love (vv.5-9).

Jesus calls us to have that same mindset, to say, “I’m willing to die to my own needs.”

That kind of cross-centered, selfless love is required in order for a marriage to last. It requires husbands and wives to focus on how they can give—rather than on getting their own needs meet.
