Worshiping with Peanut Butter and Birdseed

I find it easy to worship the Lord in the spring. The birds are singing. The flowers are blooming. Tiny seeds are miraculously becoming fruit and vegetables in my back yard and my heart seems to effortlessly burst into songs of praise.

Not so as the dark days of winter seem to go on and on and on.

Does that happen to you? Do you find yourself a little less joyful when creation goes dormant for the winter? Do you miss the natural reminders that God is alive and active and that the whole universe knows He is King?

While working under the stress of an extremely tight writing deadline last week I decided I had to have more opportunities for worship or I could not press on. I’m not much of a singer so I can’t just burst into song all by myself. So I recruited my two-year-old Eli to help me woo a chorus of worshippers to our back door.

How did we do it? With peanut butter and birdseed!

We made several birdfeeders (You know the kind where you slather peanut butter on a toilet paper roll then cover it in birdseed?) and we hung them all over our back yard. The most amazing thing happened almost immediately. Our yard began to burst with beautiful, singing birds. They were everywhere! And my heart started to swell.

Job 12:7-8,10 says, “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you . . . In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”

The birds know who the Lord is. And they were willing to share their secret with me.

Then I was reminded that birds have another story to tell.

Luke 12:24 says, “Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds.”

The birds that perched on my patio reminded me that God is worth praising because He is the King of Kings, and God is worth praising because He loves me deeply and will keep His promise to provide for my needs. The winter blahs don’t stand a chance against a reminder as powerful as that!

How about you? Are you struggling to find reasons to praise Jesus today? Has the gloom of your environment or circumstances dampened your desire to worship? Why not find a way to join the chorus of nature that sings His praises regardless of the weather. Share your ideas for how to accomplish that mission right here on the blog.
