The Story of Gwen and Marlene

When you think about being involved in women's ministry, what comes to mind? Teaching a women's Bible study? Using a structured discipleship or mentoring program? Organizing teas, luncheons, and social events at church?

While all of those things may be profitable, women's ministry also involves more simple and less formal means. Here's a glimpse of another type of women's ministry—one that doesn't require any formal training, just the willingness to share out of your own life experiences.

Take a moment to watch the video, then consider the questions that follow.

Who has been a Gwen in your life? Who has been an older woman who has been there for you? It may not have been someone who is chronologically older—sometimes it can be a younger woman God uses in this way. But who has been that encourager, that person who walked with you, that person who showed up and represented Christ to you?

And have there been any Marlenes in your life? You may not have had an official, formal mentoring relationship with this woman—just someone(s)you have helped and encouraged in their walk with the Lord.

Finally, do you know a woman who needs a Gwen in her life that you could reach out to? The Lord does not expect any of us to reach out to everyone who has a need. But just think how many women could be helped to grow in their faith and become more like Jesus, if each of us would say "Yes, Lord" when He prompts us to befriend and "be there" for a specific woman, pointing her to Christ.

I long to see God create a culture within the Body of Christ—and within your church—of women helping women.

I long to see God create a culture within the Body of Christ—and within your church—of women helping women. A culture of ministry and discipleship that goes beyond programs and occurs in the context of everyday life and relationships.

How can God use you to speak into the lives of women around you?
