That Smell Is Making Me HUNGRY!

Last night I left four pounds of chuck roast simmering in the crockpot for ten hours. When I woke this morning, a most amazing smell had wafted around the kitchen corner, up the stairs, under my door . . . and permeated just about every square inch of the house.

Even more than the smell, though, I was aware of my HUNGER. The smell made me abnormally hungry!

A few minutes later, as I was standing in the kitchen shredding the meat, I thought about how my life—like the tantalizing smell of the chuck roast—is to make people hungry. Not for chuck roast or barbeque beef, but for the most satisfying, filling food—Jesus Christ Himself. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 that:

. . . through us [God] spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life.

What aroma are you spreading to others today? Another simple way of thinking about this is to ask, “Why would people want to be like me?”

If the fragrance of your life isn’t making people hungry to know God, then my next question for you is . . . Are you, like the chuck roast, “simmering”? Are you regularly spending unhurried time at the feet of Jesus? This is what will make you tantalizingly fragrant!
