It Took Something Drastic . . .

Remember back in January when Nancy Leigh DeMoss challenged us to commit to reading the Bible every day in 2012? How’s that working out for you?

You might’ve had a few set-backs since then, a few all-nighters with homework or a colicky baby or teenagers. Perhaps your alarm didn’t wake you in time or you just plain forgot, and somewhere along the way you’ve thrown in the towel and decided 2012 is NOT your year to commit to a daily Bible reading challenge. If that’s the case, then this post is for you!

I remember it well—the day I realized how out of whack my spiritual priorities were. I was a busy young pastor’s wife in a growing church body. I was flying down the Interstate toward the hospital in Indianapolis when the Holy Spirit interrupted my thoughts. He pointed out that I was in a hurry to get some place in order to “minister” to someone . . . but I hadn’t yet met with Him!

How could I do ministry without first getting alone in prayer, worshiping Him, and receiving instruction from His Word? How could I be so flippant to think I could pour out to others without first being nourished by Him? I had forgotten the most important thing—sitting at His feet.

That day was one in a series of incidents that eventually led me to do something drastic about my commitment to daily Bible reading. No, I didn’t enter a monastery (or nunnery!), but I did take an extreme step to get my lazy self in line for what would eventually become a life-long delight.

If you’ve given up on the goal of reading your Bible every day in 2012, please don’t think it’s too late to start over. How about setting a new goal that for the next thirty days you’ll read your Bible?

In my post next Wednesday, I’ll share with you the drastic step I took. But until then, I’d love to hear what you are doing for your daily Bible reading.
