Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: It was probably “business as usual” for the priests offering sacrifices at the temple in Jerusalem that day. Business as usual, that is, until 12:00 noon, when it got suddenly dark. That afternoon, a violent earthquake shook the ground. Then, dramatically, the massive curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple was ripped in two by an unseen Hand, from top to bottom.
My friend Barbara Rainey says that even though the temple priests didn’t understand what had happened, in retrospect, we do.
Barbara Rainey: It symbolized the broken body of Jesus, that now opened the way into a relationship with God the Father Almighty.
Nancy: A torn curtain and a torn body. We call today “Good Friday” because this is the day when Jesus Christ provided for sinners free, unhindered access to a holy God.
