Woman: I’ve heard you talk about Genesis 3. It says Eve saw that the forbidden fruit was 'pleasing to the eye' and was tempted. But didn’t God make the fruit beautiful? What was so wrong about noticing the fruit?”
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: There was nothing wrong with recognizing the beauty God had made. The problem came in making outward beauty a higher priority than internal qualities like trust and obedience.
We still do the same thing today. We’re tempted to value our outward appearance more highly than what’s on the inside.
First Peter 3 helps us to know what God values most. It says that our beauty shouldn’t come from our outward characteristics, but instead “it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (v. 4).
