Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: There are lots of plans you can use to help you read through the Bible in a year.
Woman: . . . my journaling Bible . . .
Nancy: Plans like that can be really helpful.
Woman: Let’s see. What’s the date today?
Nancy: But if you use them, you need to remember—the plan isn’t the point. We study the Bible not to check another thing off our to-do list. We read the Bible so we can meet Jesus. Our devotional life always needs to revolve around a relationship, not a routine.
The Pharisees of Jesus’ day had vast, superior knowledge of the Old Testament, but Jesus told them that they didn’t know God. He said, “You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you” (see John 5:37–38).
Those scholars had missed the whole point of Bible study: it’s all about coming to know God. Whether you have a strict plan or not, the next time you read God’s Word, make sure you don’t miss Jesus.
