Where Is God?

June 23, 2023 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord— his throne is in heaven. His eyes watch; his gaze examines everyone. —Psalm 11:4

The book of Habakkuk opens with the prophet arguing with God, questioning Him, wondering if He even saw the deplorable conditions of His people. Then God, after pronouncing five woes (declarations of judgment), lets the prophet know that He is in “his holy temple” (2:20).

God is too great to be confined to a place, so what does this mean? His holy temple is not a place of retreat or isolation where God goes to get away from us, it is His domain. It is the place we need Him to be—watching, ruling, guiding, and being Lord over all.

God was there all the time; Habakkuk just needed the reminder. As G. Campbell Morgan once said, “The supreme need in every hour of difficulty and distress, is for a fresh vision of God. Seeing Him, all else takes on proper perspective and proportion.”

God is there all the time. We just need the reminder.
