Idol Making 101

June 13, 2023 Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth

“So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, take it off,’ and they gave it to me. When I threw it into the fire, out came this calf!” —Exodus 32:24

The thing that makes something into an idol is that it appeals to our longings. For some reason we think it will fill an empty space in our life—which explains why even believers can occasionally slip into some level of idolatry. That which could have a legitimate place in our lives—an activity, place, relationship, possession, or goal—can be melted down and refashioned into something quite unhealthy. Something that eclipses God.

The secondary becomes primary, the gift is craved but not the Giver, the blessings are sought for and fought for and the Blesser is forgotten.

What is it that we really want? Who is it that we really trust? Who and what are we making room for in our lives above all else?

If anything or anyone other than God Himself, our hearts could already be slipping.
