How to Know God

June 21, 2023 Kim Cash Tate

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. —James 4:8

Imagine having a best friend about whom you know little. You don’t know her story— where she’s been, things she’s done. You don’t know her heart—what she adores, what she can do without. . . .

I’m sure you’re thinking what I’m thinking—then she’s not your best friend. The two of you are not close. There’s no intimacy.

Intimacy with God is no different. We can be in relationship with God through His Son, saved and secure in our eternal future yet not dwelling closely with Him here on earth. We can know Him in a salvation sense, but not truly know Him.

But the richness comes with the knowing. Day-to-day peace and joy come with knowing. Staying anchored and abounding and rejoicing in the midst of trials and tribulations come with knowing. And intimacy with God absolutely comes with knowing.

How does all this “knowing” take place? Through the Word of God. Clinging to God doesn’t happen apart from clinging to His Word. That’s how we grow to know Him deeply.
