Be Edified

For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. —Ephesians 4:12 NKJV

To be edified means being “built up” as a believer; it’s the process of developing spiritually and growing in Christlikeness. This happens when the Word of God is poured into us through sound preaching and teaching and through spiritual disciplines like prayer, personal Bible study, and private worship.

Unfortunately, many have confused what it means to be edified with being entertained. Many are apt to follow preachers and teachers who are entertaining, all the while failing to see how these teachings lack biblical depth. While it may leave you on an emotional high for the moment, you’ll quickly find yourself returning to your former way of life.

Why? Because entertainment has no power to transform. If we’re to be genuinely sanctified, it must come from the truth of God’s Word (John 17:17). The Word comforts; the Word convicts; the Word encourages. It is both living and active. We don’t need entertainment to grow as Christians; we need to be edified through hearing and receiving the pure Word of God.

Make it Personal

Ask God to show you if there are areas of your Christian walk where you’ve been seeking entertainment over edification.
