A Changed Man

A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk . . . Lord, I have heard the report about you; Lord, I stand in awe of your deeds. —Habakkuk 3:1–2

Not to advocate the practice of critiquing one another’s prayers, but our prayer life does tattle on us; it reveals much about our spiritual standing and whether we are living by sight or by faith.

Take the prophet Habakkuk as an example. There had been a time when he was more of an anxious advisor than a humble intercessor, more likely to debate God than trust Him. But he had changed.

The doubt is gone, as are the accusations and anger. Now there is submission and reverence. Habakkuk had embraced the truth that the righteous live by faith—even in an ungodly world. And by his example we see that: faith leads us to submit to God, to trust God, and ultimately to praise God.

Nothing had really changed in Habakkuk’s circumstances, but renewed faith overtook his worry and enabled him to worship. God became his true heart focus, and the problems and the challenges were moved to the periphery.
