Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth: This wasn’t just any curtain. This was the veil that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, where the Ark of the Covenant sat and where the presence of God dwelt. Only the high priest was allowed inside, when he was responsible to make a sacrifice once a year to atone for sins. Essentially, that curtain was a barrier between sinful people and a holy God.
The gospels tell us that the moment Jesus died, that curtain was torn. Only God could have torn this magnificent, thick curtain, signifying the end of separation between man and Himself. Jesus’ death on the cross provided us access to God Himself. We no longer have to offer sacrifices or go through a high priest to get to God. It was a miracle then, and it’s a miracle today.
